Description

School of Rock Roslyn provides both in-person and online music lessons for students of all ages. Our programs, camps and workshops for toddlers, kids, teens and adults make learning to play music fun and create great communities of musicians. School of Rock is the leader in performance-based music education. We combine one-on-one drum, bass, keyboard, vocal, and guitar lessons with group practices. Students learn to play music from day one and put on live performances at local venues. Our experienced instructors are local musicians themselves who combine the performance-based School of Rock Method and programs with individual music lessons to get results for your student.

  • Ulises Amaya

    Bass/Guitar Instructor & Show Director

    Ulises Amaya is a certified K-12 educator and multi-instrumentalist from Long Island, New York.He graduated from Hofstra University in 2010 with a B.S. in Music Education, where he studied both classical and jazz double bass under Robert Emmett Bowen III, as well as jazz improvisation with David Lalama. Teaching privately since 2008, he has been an instructor with School Of Rock since 2011. Leading the Little Wing and Rookies program, he is also the director of Rock 101. In addition to his years of teaching, he continues to be an active performer on the east coast. His band, Ocho Ocho Ocho, has been performing in the New York City area and released their first EP in November 2015.

    General Manager

    John is one of the newer members to join the School of Rock and proud to be a part of the family. He attended Five Towns College for a Bachelors Degree in Music Business, and has a talent in song creation. His passion for music is limitless and enjoys performing originals as a guitarist and vocalist. John was also Honorably Discharged from the United States Air Force and is a natural leader at heart.

  • Blaise Dahl

    Studio Coordinator/Instructor

    Blaise Dahl is the singer/songwriter, rhythm guitarist, keyboard player, bassist of NYC/Brooklyn-based indie pop/art rock band, Dahl Haus (http://dahlhausmusic.com/). Dahl Haus debuted at CMJ Music Marathon in October 2014. Dahl Haus’ as yet unreleased EP, “Welcome to the Dahl Haus,’ was co-produced by Blaise and Jeff Berner of Psychic TV, and is currently being expanded into a full album. In 2012, Blaise was chosen (along with drummer Eric Slick of Dr. Dog) by composer/bassist Jesse Krakow (Shudder To Think, Dot Wiggin Band) to work on his Outside-In Fellowship project with the Brooklyn Philharmonic 's chamber orchestra, which culminated in a performance with Blaise as the featured vocalist at Galapagos Art Space in May 2013. She has also sang with Mike Peters of The Alarm, worked with Nona Hendryx of Labelle, and is a frequent featured vocalist at Joe McGinty’s (Psychedelic Furs, Ronnie Spector ) Losers Lounge tribute shows at Joes’ Pup at the Public Theater. Blaise has worked on stage or in the studio as a background vocalist and/or bassist with A Big Yes and a small no, Dialogue From a Silent Film, and most recently the Jennie Vee band (bassist for Hole, and Eagles of Death Metal). She appeared in Vee's "Lips Like Sugar" video (styled by Courtney Love from her couture wear line and featured in Nylon Magazine), as well as on select dates opening for Manic Street Preachers' "The Holy Bible" 20th Anniversary tour. As a teenager, she earned an ASCAP songwriting scholarship to attend the Grammy Foundation's first NYC Grammy Camp and toured for two years as a vocalist for the School of Rock AllStars. Suzuki -trained on piano from the age of 4, Blaise excels at ear training. As a child she played Steinway Hall and was the youngest pianist featured at QPAC Performing Arts Center's 30th Anniversary Suzuki Festival. At the age of 12, she logged 43 performances in "Cold As Ice," an original Equity musical starring Olympic Gold Medal Champion Oksana Baiul. Blaise has collaborated on various projects with MTV's pro-social division, starting as an original member of A Thin Line's anti-bullying team when she was 16, and currently (along with Jack Antonoff of Bleachers and fun.), one of only two musicians on MTV's Look Different anti-bias panel. Blaise has studied vocal technique for over 5 years with celebrity vocal coach Cari Cole. She continues her music production and music business studies online at Berklee College of Music where, in addition to pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Professional Studies, she has earned accredited certificates as a Music Marketing Specialist and Music Supervision Professional. In addition to her duties at SoR Roslyn, Blaise serves as social media specialist/special projects coordinator for School of Rock's corporate marketing department.

    Piano/Vocal Instructor

    Berklee College of Music Alumnus ASCAP member since 2000 Mike has collaborated and recorded with famed recordproducer/engineer Mike Sapone Mike's compositions have been played worldwide on TV showssuch as Wife Swap, Access Hollywood, The Wayne Brady Show, E! News Special 'Golden Globe TV Men'and he was also a composer and skit writer for the children's show 'Zebby's Zoo' Mike is also an accomplished actor. He recently shot anational promo w/ Larry the Cable Guy and has an upcoming Feature Film, whichwill soon be released titled 'The Class Reunion'

  • Derek Ciminera

    Drum Instructor

    Derek has been teaching drums for over fifteen years and has been playing since the age of eight. He currently plays with three busy cover bands: Graffiti Rose, The Mango Brothers, and Alter Ego. He also plays with a roots reggae band by the name of Hailey Unlikely. Derek is also well versed in Afro-Caribbean music having studied extensively at The Drummerʼs Collective in Manhattan. He studied Afro-Caribbean drum set, conga, bongo, timbale, bells, shekere, guiro, and maraca with Bobby Sanabria and Brazilian Drum set with Daduka Fonsaka. Derek utilizes his knowledge by playing countless DJ based percussion gigs at weddings, barmitzvahs, corporate events, and parties. He has also brandished his percussive skills for Zumba dance classes and yoga classes. He is currently playing percussion with Rob Nolfe, and performing at the Riverfish in Port Washington. In addition to performing he has also recorded a full length EP with Great Caesarʼs Ghost, Josh Joffen, and The Pineapples. Derek is also a proficient guitarist and pianist, written over fifty original songs, and recorded an original CD entitled I Would. Derekʼs formal training began at the age of eight when he studied privately for eight years with Robert Blumenthal, a highly acclaimed jazz drummer and musical director for The Harlem Youth Center. He went on to study at the prestigious Drummerʼs Collective in Manhattan for three years, and continued his studies on Long Island with Richie Rodriguez, focusing on sight reading and Afro-Caribbean music. Derek is proficient in all genres of drumming. He is very creative and has incorporated many unique techniques and tricks into his playing. He is also very proficient with double bass, ostinatos, polyrhythms, hemiolas, and odd time signatures. Derek is a qualified NYSSMA instructor and has achieved great success with all levels of snare drum and drum set. Derek tries to cater to his studentʼs tastes, and focuses mainly on the styles, drummers, and genres that inspire them. He teaches fundamentals, such as rudiments and reading, but will never force it upon a student. He is extremely patient, friendly, and relates well to children and adults. Derek believes that music should be fun at all costs, and tries to fashion his classes with that in mind, at the same time exposing his students to many different styles, to not only expand their horizons and make them better drummers, but to also show them how music is all somehow connected, creating a beautiful universal language; a language in which no words are necessary.

  • Marli Delaney

    Assistant Show Director

    Marli Delaney is currently studying for her Bachelor’s degree in Music Business at Hofstra University where she is both a music engineer at 88.7 FM WRHU for the Alternative Nation show as well as a beatboxer for the all-female a cappella group Makin’ Treble. As a teen, As a teen, Marli has been on tour with her band The Age, and has performed and worked at music festivals such as Bamboozle at Asbury Park and Catskill Chill. She has professional training in classical voice and vocal jazz, and is also an alumni of the now-defunct School of Rock Melville school where she studied guitar, bass, and piano.

  • Justin Ryan

    Drum/Guitar Instructor

    Justin Ryan is a highly talented and motivated drummer and multi-instrumentalist, as well as a recording artist, producer, writer, session player, singer, lyricist and all-around entertainer. Based in the New York Metropolitan area, Justin's young but illustrious career has allowed him to perform with hundreds of artists (some Grammy and award-winning) as has played on thousands of recordings. As a musician, Justin excels at many styles of Rock and Jazz, strongly believing that "The Groove is King" - a philosophy he employs throughout his teaching methods. Justin recently finished performing on 8 tracks for a major motion picture titled, "The Rewrite" starring Hugh Grant and Marisa Tomei which was released in 2015. In 2016, Justin and his band Lawrence officially signed with Warner Bros. Records. Additionally, Justin Ryan is thrilled to announce the release of his first, full length CD. The self-titled CD was recorded at the famed Sabella Studios and was produced by the legendary Jim Sabella and features 8 hard-rocking tunes with a distinct 70's vibe.

  • Michael Fox

    Drum Instructor

    Michael Fox was born in Brooklyn, New York and started playing drums at the age of eight. Michael studied with world-class drummers and teachers such as Sonny Igoe and Michael Carvin. Michael also studied at the Manhattan School of Music for a number of years with Jim Price, studying classical mallets and vibes. When playing for his high school band, he participated in a drum contest at the then-famed Jimmy's Night Club on West 52nd Street in NYC. "As a ninth grader, it was quite an honor to play drums for Buddy Rich who was sponsoring this contest. I was the only junior high school drummer to have been chosen to compete against some very fine high school drummers and the opportunity to play on Mr. Rich's kit was an invaluable experience that has carried me through my career." After junior high, Michael's career continued to prosper when he got auditioned and got accepted into the High School of Performing Arts. He graduated in the year of 1976 and by the age of eighteen was traveling with a show band playing seven nights a week all over the country. After his return to New York after a dedication of traveling and playing gigs, he continued to perform with such acts such as Dave Kakoski and Ted Rosenthal. He found himself in a number of musical situations such as touring and recording with Bobby Martin on her hit record "For the Love of Him" and doing classical percussion theater. Michael Fox is very big on the freelance scene. After a brief gig with the legendary Etta James at the Bitter End, he decided to settle in New York and continue doing gigs. He performed at venues such as Town Hall, Lincoln Center, The Village Gate and other known venues. He then wound up playing with the Legendary Floyd Lee Band who was a powerful blues band well known for spanning the globe for five decades. Michael recorded two records with Floyd Lee: "Mean Blues" and "Aint doing nothing wrong" which toped the blues charts for many months. Floyd Lee was signed to the Amogla Label. His music can still be heard on BB King's Bluesville. In addition to recording for film, Michael Fox performed the titled track for the music documentary "Playing for Change" (released by Sony on CD & DVD) that was a very big success. Other activities performed by Michael Fox includes Jazz ensemble "MF2", "Renee & The Derelicts", and an array of famous blues guitar players ranging from Jimmy Vivino to Billy Idol's Steve Stevens.
